It is not the intention of this chapter to give you a complete expository of every facet of intellectual property; many books have been written about that, and the relevant laws and their application change frequently enough for there to be many more books written on a constant basis. Rather, the intention is to give you a broad overview of what intellectual property is, with examples, to help you identify in your interactive gaming business what intellectual property you might hold and what might be worth protecting.
Intellectual property is surprisingly the often forgotten factor in the online gaming sector. There are intellectual property issues in all facets of provision of online entertainment, including gaming. All of those facets should be borne in mind both to maximize profit and inhibit the unscrupulous.
