n his Netzwelt report “2006 in den Augen von Google & Co. Das Jahr in Suchbegriffen” (2006 seen through the eyes of Google & Co. The year in search words), Janko Röttgers reports that the search engine Lycos has chosen "poker” as the No. 1 search word. This is a clear sign that the game of poker is developing into a national sport in Germany. It seems that nothing can stop this rise, so poker might even outstrip “skat,” Germany's favorite card game. One thing is still fairly unknown, however: The roots of this card game, which is especially popular in the United States, seem to be in Germany. The name “poker” probably originates from the old German card game\ “pochen.” The re-importation of the game, then, has been very successful.
